If God is willing… And da Creek Don’t Rise: Remembering New Orleans

It has been five years since Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc upon the shores of New Orleans and quiet as kept there is still much work to be done in the Big Easy.

Time flies.

A friend once told me that when he first saw news footage of  New Orleans during  the immediate hours after the storm, he refused to believe that he was looking at an American city. This ( referring to the incessant images of dead bodies, the overflowing Super Dome etc.) would never happen in the United States, he said. Well, my friend, it happened and we are now charged with uniting with our fellow citizens in order to restore, rebuild, and rejuvenate.

In the years since Katrina, I have been inspired by the countless examples of love and support for our friends in the bayou but it will certainly require more than a Superbowl championship to alleviate the aching spirits of those who have returned. I write these words to encourage a continued effort of activism. Life pulls us in many directions, with different responsibilities along the way therefore I understand the challenges one may face when trying to help or support various social causes/movements. I think, perhaps, that such support  comes in various forms.

Some of us cannot be on the ground teaching or cleaning or building but I do believe however, that supporting those individuals  who are on the ground is important and valuable. Donate blood. Give to your local Salvation Army. Find local charities that are dedicated to disaster relief programs. We can all be apart of the solution.

I know God is more than willing.
