Intersections of Race & Sexuality in Art: Thelma Golden’s TED Talk

by on August 24, 2010

I stumbled on an interesting article on Ebony Jet that featured a TED Talk by Thelma Golden, curator at the Studio Museum of Harlem. Back when I was a toddler, Golden solely curated a famous exhibition entitled, “The Black Male.” It provoked all types of discussion and controversy about the modern day black male and the use of art  to express the many layers of black manhood.

This is interesting because it was one of the first exhibitions to challenge notions of black masculinity and sexuality. I’m interested in how art can facilitate the discussion of marginalized issues, transferring them to the mainstream. Art has the power start conversations where formally people remained mute. We could use more of it in the black community and for that I’m thankful for Golden’s work.

Enjoy the video!
