Start Zora On Your Campus

Are you an aspiring journalist, writer, filmmaker, or artist in college? Do you want to help create the next big thing for and by black women? Then join us!

Beginning Fall 2011, we’ll be starting Zora magazine at campuses around the country. We are looking for intelligent and dedicated young women to serve as the Editors-In-Chief and launch campus branches. If you’ve dreamed of starting your own magazine, this is your chance! We’re looking for intelligent, hard-working young women to launch campus branches of Zora magazine.

What is Zora on campus?

Zora on Campus gives young women a platform to build and promote communities on their college campuses. It is a unique opportunity for a campus team to build their own campus-based edition of Zora magazine that will be part of a national network.

Zora on Campus is a section of Zora magazine devoted solely to your campus.

What is the role of an Editor-in-Chief?

Bowling alone is hard! So we’re looking for two women on each campus to serve as co Editors-in-Chief. Editors will be responsible for building a staff, gathering content, and marketing Zora. The position is unpaid but will give you an opportunity to build something unique from scratch, to collaborate with a partner, and to gain diverse professional and personal experiences. Specifically, you must:

  • Build an editorial staff of at least five people, including the Editors, on your campus. The staff can consist of writers, photographers, artists, etc. and will help you grow your branch
  • Manage the publication schedule for your campus edition. Your edition should include at least three new posts each week
  • Promote Zora by building readership, sponsoring or co-sponsoring events, and through other initiatives

Sounds great! How do I apply?

If selected as your campus Editor-in-Chief, you agree to serve for one school year. As this is our launch year, we are currently looking for those who are willing to start building a team this summer, and to serve during the 2011-2012 school year (from August 1 2011 through July 31 2012).

If you are interested in applying, we suggest you find a co-Editor and apply together. You may also apply alone and we will contact you if someone else on your campus applies and we think you’d be a good match.

To apply, please submit:

  • Cover Letter (one per team): Explain why you want to lead Zora on your campus, what you believe you will bring to the position, and why the mission/vision of Zora magazine appeals to you
  • Resume (one per individual): Submit a current resume of no more than two pages
  • Writing samples (two per individual): Submit writing samples that show your strengths as a writer. Suggested examples include magazine clippings or blogs posts
  • Sample stories (one per team): Provide 3 sample titles and descriptions of posts for your campus edition. The posts should include at least one possible interview with an individual in your community that you think would be of interest to Zora magazine audience (e.g., professor, student, entrepreneur doing something that matters to young black women)
  • Publicity samples (one per team): Provide 3 ideas you have for publicizing Zora on your campus

Send the above in one file (word or pdf) to editor[at]zoramagonline.com
